Recently I discovered a fact that left me shocked: 40% of millennials choose the destination for their vacation based on how instagrammable the place is. The research was carried out by Schofields, a holiday home insurance company, who surveyed over 1000 UK adults aged between 18 and 33. The result left me quite surprised and is the index of how our life on social media also affects our real life. At the base of this I think there is a need for us millenials to show a perfect life, in beautiful places that serve well in photos.
As you know I love traveling and I travel a lot. Doing an analysis on myself I realized that I often tend to choose my destination based on how Instagrammable my photos will be. As you know, I love interior design, so I specifically look for hotels and restaurants with an appealing design to show you on the blog and social media. Since it is inevitable for us millennials to be influenced by social media in our choices, I decided to create this guide on how to choose your next destination, without forgetting the real life:
Visualizza questo post su Instagram
- Follow travel influencers on Instagram to get inspired by their photos and the destinations they choose.
- Take screenshots your favorite photos and save them in folders by location. Once you are in that destination you can take a cue from those photos to make yours. Remember, however, not to copy and not to create an identical photo, but only to take inspiration to make a unique shot
- When you have chosen the destination, make a search through the hashtags or geolocation for the best cafes, restaurants, hotels or museums that are visually beautiful.
- Remember that traveling is discovering. Do not just go to the places where everyone has gone, but throw yourself in, explore, ask the locals for advice and look for hidden gems that no one has ever seen.
- Remember to enjoy your trip. Real life is not just Instagram or looking for the perfect place for the perfect photo. During the journey it is important to be present in the here and now, learn about new traditions and cultures and not just think about social media

To conclude, thanks to this research I made a self reflection. I work on social media, so for me it is inevitable that part of my life is focused on the perfect picture, but sometimes for us young people and for our mental health it is important to give us periods of digital detox, and enjoy life for what it is , living it without necessarily sharing it. I want to know what you think about it, do you choose your travel destination based on how beautiful the photos will be? How do you choose your destinations?

Any place is instagrammable if you have a good eye! You could totally go somewhere not tainted by IG and still have a fantastic time. I think there’s still beauty in just exploring the unknown and being in the moment!

My bucket list is full of places, though! Haha. Your photos are gorgeous, by thw way. And I love the little disclaimer at the end, it’s important to also give a sense of reality eveyrtime we talk on Instagram these days 🙂

Great article, Olga! I had no idea there is a segment of the millennial population that selects vacay destinations based on how Instagrammable they are. Very interesting find. You make great suggestions too. Vacations should be about digital detox! Yet, if you find that hidden gem, do capture it in your own unique way and share it later. 🙂

That is so interesting to know that 40% of millennials choose where they travel based on how instagrammable it is! Most of my trips are to a lot of national parks so technically they are beautiful to photograph, but that’s just an extra bonus. You gave some great tips, especially to look up hashtags and to remember to enjoy your trip!
