Christmas in Germany is a very beloved tradition and having the chance to spend most of the Christmas period in Bavaria each year is one of the things I love the most. You can feel Christmas magic at every corner, thanks to the Christmas markets, a tradition carried out throughout Germany but that becomes even more important especially in Bavaria. I have visited many Christmas markets since I moved to Germany and they are all beautiful and very similar, even if everyone has its peculiarities and its unique atmosphere. I’ve taken the photos of this post in the Augsburg’s Christmas Market that is set up at Rathausplatz but the things that I listed for you can be done in any German Christmas market.
Drink Glühwein and collect the mugs
The Glühwein (mulled wine) is a must in the Christmas markets. There are different types, even non-alcoholic, but my favorite is of white wine. The thing that I love the most, however, is that when you buy your wine you will have to pay extra for the Pfand which would be a small deposit, usually 3 or 5 euros, which will be refunded when you return the mug where the Glühwein is served. My advice, however, is to keep the mug; it’s really nice a souvenir and it’s very cheap. I like to keep the most beautiful mugs and collect them.
Try the typical food
At the Christmas markets there are many street food stalls both sweet and savory. From the inevitable würstel to the potatoes pancakes up to the Schneebälle, a typical Rothenburg dessert. I advise you to try new specialties as much as possible and not to think about diets.
Buy beeswax candles
At the Christmas markets you can find handmade candles of all kinds, but I advise you to buy one in beeswax, which you can find in any German market. The beeswax candles, in fact, in addition to being healthier than normal candles, also have the ability to purify the air when you burn them. You can find them in all sort of way, from the simpler to de more decoreted ones.
Buy at least one Christmas tree ornament
The stalls for Christmas decorations are really a lot, but I particularly love the ornaments for the tree. There are really all kinds, from the most classic to the super-colored and particular. You will return home with a souvenir for your tree that will always time spent at the Christmas market.
Enjoy the magical atmosphere both during day and night
Christmas markets are really magical. They are beautiful at any time of the day but in the evening it’s an explosion of lights and everything is even more magical. Enjoy yourself, enjoy the moment and savor the unique Christmas atmosphere that makes these places truly wonderful.
I’d love to go to German Christmas markets one day. I’ve only ever been to ones in England and Spain. I love your photos and the Schneebälle

Bavaria is beautiful! I spent some time in Oberammergau and I felt like I was walking in a Hansel and Gretel fairy tale. It was so pretty! The markets are so nice and I loved all the Black Forest cuckoo clocks! I bought several. 🙂 I would love to return during Christmas. Thank you for sharing this post, Olga! 🙂
