One of my resolutions for the new year is to travel more, but I realized that despite living in one of the most beautiful regions of Germany, visited by thousands of tourists every day, I haven’t explored it enough. After my last trip to Bamberg in October, Ste and I have no longer made mini trips to discover Bavaria, so last Sunday we decided to see one of the places I’ve always dreamed of seeing: the Neuschwanstein castle. This castle has inspired the exterior of Walt Disney Sleeping Beauty castle, and it’s one of the most beautiful buildings I’ve ever seen. Near the town of Fussen there is also Hohenschwangau castle, less glitzy but something wonderful if admired from the top, surrounded only by nature. What I loved about these places is just that: the nature that surrounds them, the peace that you had to feel there before they were overwhelmed by mass tourism.
Below are some tips to visit the most beautiful castles of Bavaria:
1. If you want to visit the interior of Neuschwanstein castle it’s better to go early in the morning, especially in high season. The visits are organized according to specific times.
2. The castles are connected by an uphill walk of about 30 minutes in the middle of nature. There is also the possibility to walk this stretch in beads of a horse-drawn carriage. I suggest this experience to fully enter into the romantic spirit.
3. To enjoy the best view of the Neuschwanstein castle, take the 10 minute walk to get to the Marienbrücke, a wooden bridge that crosses a spectacular deep gorge
4. If you love “winter wonderland” landscapes, go to these places after a snowfall. It makes everything magical.
5. Do not just visit the castles but stop in the lovely town of Fussen.
