We still have at least two months of winter ahead of us so it’s time to invest in a good ethical and sustainable sweater. If you also want to invest in a good sweater that will last you many years, these are the characteristics it should have:
- Natural or recycled fibers. Often the sweaters sold by Fast Fashion or unsustainable brands contain a high percentage of polyester, a material that is not sustainable and that releases dangerous microplastics with each wash.
- Fair labor. It’s not enough to use recycled materials for a brand to define itself as sustainable. It’s important that the workers who produce the garments receive a fair salary and treatment.
- Timelessness. Choose clothes and brands that are timeless and avoid following fashions trends that do nothing but induce us to buy more and more and to consider as “old” clothes worn only a couple of times.
The 5 sweaters that I recommend today have all these characteristics and I really love them!
Twothirds
This knit is made entirely from recycled materials: 80% are made up of recycled wool fibres, 15% of recycled nylon, 5% other recycled fibres. Twothird is a brand form Barcelona that produce their clothes in family-run factories in Portugal that meet their sustainability standards.
Organic Basics
Organic Basics has recently launched their new sweaters which, as usual, have a minimal and clean design. They are made of 100% recycled merino from pre-consumer textile waste that would otherwise go to landfill. Organic Basics is a brand from Denmark that produce in factories that ensure their workplace is free of child labor and forced labor and that their workers are surrounded in a safe working space and paid a living wage.
Dariadéh
This sweater is made is 50% made of recycled cotton, 50% of organic cotton. Dariadéh is a young brand that is not only sustainable and ethical, but also very inclusive. The sizes range from XXS to XXXL:
Finisterre
This brand uses wool for their sweater and they source it only form certified farms. They also only source 100% guaranteed non-mulesed wool. Mulesing is a painful and cruel procedure where skin is removed from around the backside of the sheep.

This amazing basic sweater is made from 100% cruelty-free Merino Wool. Komodo is a brand that uses only premium quality organic, natural and eco fibres, and innovative fabrics such as green PU coating and recycled PET, from plastic bottles.
